The ACADEMY Athletic Report – 8.21.20

Message from Coach MAC

Welcome back from Spring Break!  (Just Kidding).

So much has happened since we last were all together! We had 4 full weeks of socially distanced camps including basketball and volleyball. The Griffin Volleyball team has new Head and Assistant Volleyball Coaches. Jaszmyne Anderson starts 2020 as the 2nd Head Volleyball Coach in school history and will also be the PE aide at North. Chelsea Smith comes to us from Texas as Assistant Volleyball and Assistant Girls Basketball Coach. Both have already made a huge impression on our D&R Girls. Our athletic participation numbers have almost doubled since last year adding HS teams for volleyball and 2 additional teams for girls basketball. The growth is astounding, and we continue to provide quality mentors and opportunities for our student-athletes while staying abreast of the protocols and precautions associated with COVID. Whether we complete each of the upcoming seasons or have to pivot, our Athletic Department will continue to stay Griffin Strong!

Weekly Sports Recap

While our student body started school on Wednesday, the D&R Volleyball teams kicked off the 2020 season Tuesday night at Midtown against HCAA member Liberty Academy from Shawnee. The Dialectic White team earned the first win of the year for the Griffins with a straight-set victory in the opener (25-22, 25-11). Both the Rhetoric teams started strong with Game 1 wins, but the Eagles from Liberty dashed the hopes of the Griffins in the remaining games. The Junior Varsity lost (25-20, 12-25, 14-16) while the Varsity went down in 4 games (25-22, 14-25, 23-25, 11-25). “I was proud of the girls (on Tuesday)! They played hard and didn’t give up at all!” said Coach Jasz.

Reminder and Changes to Midtown Gameday Experience

Reminder that all our students, parents, and fans should park in the South parking lot off 11th Street and enter through the South doors (under the green awning) to come straight up to the gym. This entrance also allows for handicap access to the elevator. Please observe The Academy signage directing our community away from the North entrance. Our North parking lot can still be used for overflow parking if necessary, but please leave the spaces next to the clinic open. The Admission/Pass Gate is located on the South side of the gym as you enter off the stairs or elevators. Our current COVID Gameday precautions include:

  • All fans must wear masks – Temperature checks at the door (must be under 100.4)
  • Social distance markings in the stands to direct families to remain 6 feet apart
  • Concession workers wear masks and gloves during food prep and service
  • Lastly, restroom access during Volleyball is still on the 2nd floor down the North stairs by the stands. Main Gym locker rooms are for team personnel and player access only.

We rely on many parent and community volunteers to help man our Pass Gate, scorers tables, and concession stands, and we are extremely grateful to all of you who volunteer your time and will help facilitate this changes.
