It brings us great pleasure to introduce our new district school nurse, Katie Barrier, R.N. Katie is a graduate of Northern Oklahoma College and her most recent experience includes working in the medical, surgical, and progressive care units of OU Medical Center Edmond. Additionally, she is certified by the Board of Education to serve as a School Nurse in the accredited schools of Oklahoma. Katie and her husband, Chris, attend Life Church in Edmond.
In the immediate day-to-day life of our school, Katie will administer medications, attend to sick students, provide age-appropriate classroom education on specific health subjects at all campuses, maintain district-wide student health records, and serve as the main point of contact for parents where the health of their student is concerned during school hours. Although the district nurse office is located at the North Campus, scheduled visits to the South and Midtown campuses will be part of Katie’s weekly rotation.
With an eye to the future, we hope to begin offering on-site vaccines for staff and students as well as on-site testing for flu, strep, RSV and, when it becomes available, COVID-19. As this opportunity unfolds (stay tuned!), our school nurse will play a vital role in its implementation. Katie’s first day with The Academy is Tuesday, September 8. We are excited to offer this new level of health care oversight to our Academy staff and families!
