Message from Coach MAC
Volleyball and Cross Country are the Fall Sports at The ACADEMY. But while our teams compete August to October, our athletes and coaches begin training in the summer. That may seem like a long build up for a short time, but imagine the training of an Olympic athlete. They train for 4 years and try to prepare and peak for a single race! There are no do-overs. There are no make-up opportunities if you’re not feeling good that day or if you have an injury a few days before. Some make the team as an alternate in case someone better than them gets hurt. All the training and build up may go for naught. But that is the great thing about sports and being part of a team like the Griffins. It’s not just about who won or lost, or if your student played a little, a lot, or not at all. There are many roles on athletic teams and every person plays their part and “trains” in their role for that one opportunity that may or may not ever come. But there is pride and honor in being a part of the team and wearing the Griffins name and colors. Our athletes are learning to be supportive, to sacrifice for the greater good, and work to make their teammates better on and off the field or court. And the Griffins stay strong as they prepare, train, and compete in honor of their families, coaches, teammates, and friends at all three campuses.
Weekly Sports Recap
The Cross Country Grammar teams had their first meet of the year after being rained out a week ago. The 2nd/3rd grade division was won by Maggie Flint with Annie Burt right on her tail – both finishing in under 8 minutes. The boys had 6 that finished under 8 minutes led by Henry Corbin and Rush Shaw. In the 4th/5th grade division there were 5 boys that finished under 7 minutes led by Jack Eckles and Asher Green. The girls winner was Catherine Judd. Details are being finalized to do a make-up race for Grammar on October 6th as a make up for the rain out last week. The D&R squads will run in Choctaw during the day this Friday.
Volleyball traveled North to Edmond on Tuesday to take on Oklahoma Christian Academy. It was the first time that The ACADEMY has taken on OCA and it was a good night overall for the Griffins with both Dialectic White and the JV squads winning in straight sets. The Varsity had its hands full with an experienced outside attack that downed 6A PC North just a week ago. The Griffins held their own and made a rally in the third set but ultimately the Eagles senior hitter was too much for our girls. Thursday night Midtown Gym was rocking as several of the basketball boys led a rockus student section for most of the JV and Varsity matches vs Covenant Community. The teams fed off their friends but were unable to pull out victories over a talented Covenant squad. The Rhetoric teams will be back in action next Tuesday as they play host to HCAA rival Destiny Christian.
Griffin Dialectic Volleyball to Host Weekend Tournament September 19
Come out to Midtown Gym tomorrow (Saturday) to watch our Dialectic teams compete in our 2nd Annual Griffin JH Volleyball Tournament. The 6-team pool includes Liberty, Terra Verde, Life and OKC Knights and starts at 8am, with the championship game set for 4pm. Our Griffins return as defending champions as they defeated the Knights 9th-grade team last year in the championship.
Student-Athlete Leadership Council Applications Being Accepted
The Athletic Department is now accepting applications for the Student-Athletic Leadership Council. The Leadership Council is a group of student-athletes that will regularly meet with the Athletic Director and staff to discuss issues, team-building, and the future of the athletic department at The ACADEMY. The Council members will give voice to the athletes as well as learn different leadership strategies to take back to their team and give back with service and program opportunities on Gamedays. Those Rhetoric athletes wishing to apply to be on the ALC can stop by the Athletic Office at Midtown and request an application from Coach MAC. Final Applications are due September 18th.
