Message from Coach MAC
October means ORANGE: leaves, pumpkins, and BASKETBALL!
The Griffin basketball teams will start to gear up this month with practices as they approach the start of the winter season beginning of November. It is a fun time to see who has grown and improved from each year as the teams always look different – even when the same players return! At The ACADEMY we have grown tremendously over the last 2 years and our basketball numbers continue to grow. We have over 20 players registered for both Dialectic Girls and Boys teams; and 8 Rhetoric girls, and 11 Rhetoric boys looking to don the Navy and Grey this season. Last year we had over 100 Grammar students playing at Destiny and we are excited about the future of our program as we transition to our new 3X3 Basketball League at Midtown for 3rd-6th grade players. But don’t forget that Volleyball and Cross Country are still coming down the home stretch of their seasons even as Basketball is starting to ramp up! It’s an exciting time for Athletics at The ACADEMY. Come be a part!
Weekly Sports Recap
The third Grammar Cross Country meet of the year saw over 150 runners PK-5th grade! The races began with our precious PK and 1st graders who burned up the course. Mack Sonntag and Elliot Rhea finished the mile course in under 8:00 and our top girl, Victoria Methvin, finished on their heels with a time of 8:01, and third place overall. The 2nd/3rd grade girls race was won again by Maggie Flint with Audrey Kammerer and Annie Burt rounding out the top 3. The boys’ 2nd/3rd grade had 7 that finished under 8 minutes led by Henry Corbin, Joseph Reed, and Sutton Dearmon all coming in sub 7 minutes. In the 4th/5th grade division there were 7 boys that finished under 7 minutes led by Jack Eckles and Judah Arter. The girls’ top finishers were Catherine Judd and Kenzi Ketron who both finished just under 7:40! Grammar XC will host their final race next week on Tuesday, October 6th as a make up for the rain out 2 weeks ago. D&R Cross Country runs their final scheduled meet before State this Saturday at Community Christian in Norman. The Volleyball teams made the trek up Turner Turnpike to take on HCAA-rival Wright Christian Academy on Monday evening. Both Dialectic teams came away with victories! The High School teams gave Wright a tough shot but ultimately returned home with losses. The last home matches of the year will be Monday, October 5th at 5:00 for JV and 6:00 for Varsity. Make a special effort to come out to Midtown next Monday to cheer on our great kids!
Athletes of the Month
August Athlete of the Month is sophomore Liza Keller. Liza has made a leap from her freshman year and is anchoring our growing Volleyball program. Liza has been a canny defender on the back row and at the net, as well as steadily improving her ability to get crowd-pleasing kills from multiple spots on the court.
September Athlete of the Month is freshman Anna Claire Orr. Anna Claire is in her first year running for The ACADEMY and has quickly shown a natural talent for cross country. Coach Rhea says that her times are rapidly coming down and she is learning better tactics and course management. At CCS a few weeks ago she finished Top 30 and, other than her teammate Esperanza Osuna, every finisher ahead of Anna Claire was a 5A or 6A runner.
