The ACADEMY Athletic REPORT – 12.4.20

Message from Coach MAC

It’s great to be a Griffin! After a two week break our Midtown students returned and there is an electricity in the air because we get to be together. Same for our athletic teams. We are thankful for those in our community that continue to do everything within their power to be as safe as possible while we provide sport activities. Our coaches dialogue daily with our athletes about “giving it their all” and “treating it like it could be your last.” We continue to urge our students and parents to be extra vigilant about reporting symptoms and/or staying home if they don’t feel well to protect our school community. And our student-athletes keep showing up and training hard despite not knowing if a game will be cancelled or postponed. This is a testament to our kids being “Griffin Strong” and their love for all things ACADEMY.

Weekly Sports Recap

After a 2-3 week layoff for our basketball teams, they returned to the hardwood Tuesday night at Life Christian Academy. It was a rough night for most of the teams as they had difficulty knocking the rust off (The HS teams had not been together for almost 20 days). Both girls teams lost to an athletic Life squad. In the JV Girls game freshman Messiah Macon led the team with 9 points followed by sophomore Macy Elledge scoring 4.

The MS boys game was over quickly as our White team swarmed and harassed the Eagles team into multiple turnovers throughout the game ultimately winning 39-15. Leading scorer on the night was Eli Capucille (7th grade) with 9 points, 6 steals, and 2 assists. Fellow 7th grader Austin Irons added 8 points.

The night concluded with an exciting back and forth matchup in the Boys HS Varsity game. Neither team led by more than six during the game with both teams holding a 2-point lead in the past minute of the game. Unfortunately, the Griffins could not find their shooting touch on the night (30%) and the 2 game-winning shots on the last possession failed to find the net, losing 55-52. Senior Jackson Holdsworth led the team in scoring (10 points) with his daring drives in the 4th quarter.

The boys teams have games next Tuesday while the girls return to action on December 14th.

Basketball Schedule Update

Several games and tournaments have either been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-related concerns with our opponents. We continue to try to reschedule or move games in order to continue to provide opportunities for our student-athletes. Tonight’s game at Cornerstone was postponed in addition to next week’s Middle School Tournament at Terra Verde.

New Home Game Gym Protocols Review

Next Tuesday is our first home games since early November. Reminder that fans are limited to parents only – NO SIBLINGS. Fans will still be temperature checked and required to wear masks. No concessions will be sold during the games. Games will be livestreamed on the athletic Youtube channel so fans won’t miss the action. Stay tuned for links to the stream next week.

Additionally, due to the Midtown Renovation, the usual bathrooms will be unavailable. Fans will be asked to either use the locker room restrooms beneath the stands, or go down to the first floor. Restrooms will be unavailable during halftime when the teams are together.

Update: Griffin 3X3 Basketball League Postponed to January 2021
