Message from Coach MAC
This past week has once again been a frustrating one amidst the turmoil of 2020. While many of us have enjoyed the snow, it caused yet another set of games to be cancelled or postponed on Tuesday. Our community continues to be supportive and flexible with the last-minute changes, but it is still frustrating, nonetheless. All the uncertainty can take a mental toll on our students, staff, and families. But it is even more important during these uncertain times to focus on the present. To be in the moment. To cherish the times we do get to be together as a team, as a class, and as a school. We choose to put our faith in Christ who gives us peace and comfort during a time of unrest. And through this faith, together, we remain Griffin Strong.
Weekly Sports Recap
The MS teams headed to HCAA-rival Destiny in a triple-header Monday night. In the MS Boys Blue opener the short-handed Griffins were paced by 7th Grader Tristan Lesley who scored 14 points on 7-14 shooting. Isaiah Payne added 12 points but Destiny pulled it out 40-28. The White team won 34-25 behind an outstanding game from 8th graders Mason Broome (14 points, 11 rebounds). In the MS Girls game 8th Grader Claire Wilkerson was the leading scorer with 6 points as the girls lost 20-11.
Tuesday night’s game were postponed due to weather conditions. Future makeup dates are yet to be determined.
Thursday night closed out 2020 with some excitement. The MS Boys White team controlled most of the game vs the OKC Knights, but in a furious finish that included a jump ball turnover for both teams, the Knights regained the ball with 4 seconds left down 1 point. They threw a long skip pass over the defense that was fumbled, then thrown up off the glass from 3 to take down the Griffins 33-31 for their first defeat of the season (4-1). The JV Girls ran into a hot-shooting Liberty team in the middle game losing by a large margin.
In the late game the Varsity Boys took on future conference rival Cristo Rey for the first time since beating them in the MidMoore Tourney last season. The Griffins defense was stifling, holding Cristo Rey to only 3 points in the first half, eventually cruising to a 60-14 victory to finish the abbreviated first semester schedule at 6-1. Freshman Sam High again led the Griffins in scoring with 13 points on the night. Fellow Freshman Owen Cain had 6 points and 9 rebounds in only 13 minutes.
