The ACADEMY Athletic Report – 1.22.21

Message from Coach MAC

It’s been a big, crazy, messy week with all things pandemic going on around us. I have received many nice notes or messages of thanks to our school and Athletic Department for the intentionality that we have shown around Athletics and COVID protocols this year. Did you know that tonight’s Dialectic Boys game was the first game we were going to have to cancel outside of the Thanksgiving Campus Reset? This is truly a testament to the way our community is engaged and wanting to keep many of our activities going. While not ideal to only allow parents at our home games, the interest in our Livestream shows that interest is still high and our community wants to interact and engage with each other. But we must remain diligent and not relax too much. In this vein I continue to encourage our school community in the same way I encourage our athletes daily – to not take chances with the health of our school. If you have a sore throat or have other symptoms, stay home and make sure you are safe to come back to school rather than jeopardize the health and safety of our fellow Griffins. We love our school and we love our staff – let’s continue to protect both by continuing to take precautions. Go Griffins Go!

Weekly Sports Recap

The Varsity boys continue to roll in their second year. The Griffins are currently on a 4-game win streak taking them to 10-2 on the season so far after two road wins at Liberty and Eagle Point without two senior starters. The Friday night road crowd in Shawnee saw a dominating team performance as the Griffins shot a school-record 52% from the field and won by an astounding 52 points (73-21). Led by Sam High who posted 20+ points for the 2nd straight game, 3 other Griffins also scored in double figures. Tuesday night the boys struggled to get on track all night, constantly in foul trouble and battling turnovers, but were able to squeak out a narrow victory vs Eagle Point in Sapulpa (51-47). Freshmen Ed Thomas and Sam High led the Griffins in scoring with 12 and 13, respectively. Freshman Owen Cain was dominant again on the boards pulling down 16 rebounds against Eagle Point’s 6’4 post player.

The JV Girls also got a huge victory Tuesday night hanging on for a 34-33 win on the road. The girls were led in scoring by Cora Shutt who put up a game-high 16 points!

The MS teams split on both nights as the girls lost two close ones on the road and both the Boys’ Blue team and White team picked up big wins at Liberty and Eagle Point, respectively with Calvin Thomas scoring 10 point against Liberty as he was a perfect 5 for 5 from the field to go along with 5 steals.
