The ACADEMY Athletic Report – 2.26.21

Message from Coach MAC

Last weekend of basketball season! As the High School guys wrapped up their last practice yesterday, we reflected on a long year of uncertainty, but improbably we made it to the finish line – punctuated with a trip to the State Semifinals tonight vs Destiny. I truly did not believe we would have the success in Year 2 of the program that we’ve had: 18 wins, knocking off #3 Providence. It was overwhelming. But each season is this way. You begin the year not knowing how the team will respond or come together. Will they even like each other? This season’s team had some of the best chemistry of any team I have been a part of. You remember teams for different reasons, but this team will go down as a group of young men that just stuck together no matter the circumstances. Win or lose tonight our student athletes are the best! Go Griffins Go!

Weekly Sports Recap

The High School Boys were down and out on Tuesday after a rough matchup vs Destiny on Monday night. The Griffins could not find their groove in a large loss that did not see the ball go through the hoop very often, despite the great crowd of support. But Tuesday’s State Quarterfinal game was just the opposite of Monday. Freshman wing Sam High had “one of those days” where the basket was huge, in route to 8 made threes and 26 points on the day. Fellow Freshman Ed Thomas also poured in 20 as the Griffins upset #3 Providence to advance to the State Semifinals Friday and a rematch with #1 Destiny at 8:30 at Liberty Academy. The plucky Griffins got off to a great start but the size of Providence (2 guys over 6’7 and 3 guys over 6’4) started to give them problems as Providence went up 6 with 2:00 to go. But back-to-back 3’s from High (which got the Wright Christian crowd up and cheering) gave the Griffins a chance. Made free throws from Thomas and Owen Cain sealed the victory stunning the Providence and making the Griffins the talk of the HCAA all week.

The MS Boys and JV Girls finish up their seasons this weekend at the MidMoore tournament. The MS Boys are the odds on favorites to win after avenging a loss to Echo from last year on Day 1. The remaining games for the Griffins are against teams they have beat handily this year. The JV Girls played 2 games yesterday but were unable to come out with a victory. They will play Saturday at 10:20 to end their season.

3X3 End of Season and COVID Protocol Reminders

3X3 Basketball finishes strong! The last full slate of games is next week, Saturday, March 6th. Don’t forget that you will need the athletic door code for Midtown when you come to play your games! Also, all North campus practices before 6:15 will be at Cap Gym this week.

Reminder that we are adhering to a “2-family member” attendance rule and that MASKS ARE REQUIRED when you visit our campuses. Please remind your students to wear their masks as they arrive and leave practice. Parents must also wear masks, especially if they remain in the practice location. When at Midtown, please sit in the bleachers or at the baseline tables by family to practice social distancing. Please do not sit behind the benches unless you are part of the coaching staff.
