Message from Coach MAC
I just witnessed 118 high school students during a morning gym takeover! Kids were playing basketball and volleyball. There was a dance party and many break out groups at the tables, in the stands, and in the teen area. It was full! It gave me a vision of what our gym is going to look like on Gamedays as we continue to grow. And we are growing! We will have 7 high school teams competing this year with 7 middle school teams growing behind them. We now have more HS athletes then we had HS students when I started 2 years ago! Girls Volleyball is off to a 3-0 start, and our Cross Country teams make their debut at CCS tomorrow! It is a great time to be a Griffin. Go Griffins Go!
Weekly Recap
The Griffins Varsity Volleyball team came from behind Tuesday for the 2nd straight match to win 3-1 over conference foe Liberty Academy in Shawnee (18-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14).
Grace Despain and Blevin Garriott led the team with 12 assists each while Freshmen Addison Dale and Avery Metcalf had 10 kills and 9 service aces respectively.
The Middle School team also made their debut at Liberty, splitting sets in a communication mixup where the correct teams did not play. The match will not count against the teams record for Tournament seeding.
Thursday in Stillwater The ACADEMY came out firing in the first two sets playing clean, crisp volleyball at Covenant. But Covenant settled in and fought hard to even up the score and force a deciding 5th set. The Griffins fell behind 4-8 in the last set only for freshman Cora Shutt to go on a big run with everyone playing great defense to keep points alive. Senior Mia Magrini subbed in late the last set and delivered some clutch serve-receive passing and digging to spark a run to a 3-2 victory (25-18, 25-14, 21-25, 18-25, 15-11). The Griffins have started the season 3-0 (2-0 in conference) under new coaches MaryAshton Floyd and Beau Fraley. All teams return to action next Tuesday at Midtown.
The Cross-Country teams make their 2021 debut Saturday at CCS. First race is 8:15.
