Notes from the North Campus – 8.27.21

From your North Campus principals, Lindsay Berryhill and Jake Schulte

“Whatever you do, do it gently and unhurriedly, because virtue is not a pear to be eaten in one bite.” Seraphim of Sarov

What comes to mind when you hear the words “back-to-school?” This common phrase seems to have become synonymous with busy. One pictures a frazzled mom frantically raiding the fridge to pack lunches, bleary-eyed children being cajoled to “JUST GET IN THE CAR WE’RE GOING TO BE LAAAATE!,” and cross-eyed dads trying to beat the rush of the car line chaos to get the kids to soccer practice across town. Teachers dash to the workroom for last-minute copies, holding a cup of steaming coffee that will be forgotten until it qualifies as a cold brew. This is normal, right?

In contrast, your beautiful children attend a school that espouses “unhurried wonder.” We deeply value time spent in contemplation and mindfulness. So how do we as Academy families pursue the unhurried life while still living in this society with its varied, ever-changing demands? We’d like to offer a few suggestions to assist your family in this meaningful pursuit in the middle of our back-to-school season. We’d love to hear more about the ways in which your family finds peace in these times. Send us an email, and we’ll share it next week! Turn off the radio on the morning and afternoon drives. Spend time in silence as you begin and end your school days.

Trade in Family Movie Night for Family Reading Night. Pile up the cozy blankets and pillows, stack up those long-neglected books, and read to your hearts’ content. Perhaps each family member will read silently or take turns reading aloud from a book of poetry.

  • Turn off your electronic devices for one hour a day.
  • Move your family dinner to a picnic blanket in the backyard, or light candles and turn off all lights and devices.
  • We are praying for your family to find peace and calm in this season.

With love,

Lindsay Berryhill and Jake Schulte

North Notes:

Uniform: The Academy is aware that Land’s End is behind, and parents are not receiving orders. Please do not stress about the details of your child’s uniform as there is a pause on multiple key vendors. Land’s End is working to send out your orders as soon as possible. We thank you for your patience and will work with you in this time.
