The Academy Athletic Report – 8.27.21

Message from Coach MAC

At Parent Conference a few weeks ago, we released an athletic video talking about how far we’ve come as a school in just 2 years, and in the middle of a pandemic! In that video one of the last things I said was that “this will be our best season yet!” But not even I could have predicted what has transpired in August alone. With 5 new coaches, new systems, and many families squeezing in last minute vacations I assumed it could be a rough start coming out of the gate. But Volleyball is still undefeated and 3 of the 4 Cross Country teams placed at their debut meet at CCS last weekend. Our athletes and coaches continue to amaze me as they grow as athletes and leaders. Speaking of leaders – our new Athletic Leadership Council program has now met twice. This is a group of 10 high school student-athletes across all sports that give voice to the athlete and learn about being better leaders in their sport. They all completed a 3-hour Captain’s Course through the NFHS and are already learning how to be better competitors and servant leaders for their team. What an exciting way to live out the Vision of a Griffin Athlete!   Go Griffins Go!

Weekly Recap

The Griffins Cross Country teams got off to a great start for 2021 with 3 team awards at the CCS Meet this morning in Norman. Our reigning HCAA Girls’ State Medalists – sophomore AnnaClaire Orr and senior Esperanza Osuna – placed in the Top 10 and led the Varsity Girls to a 3rd place finish.

In the Varsity Boys Race sophomore Jay Abbott led the boys team to a strong finish in the 2-mile race, running a 12:30.

The JH boys placed 2nd as a team led my 8th grader Isaiah Payne who placed 11th overall, running a 6:15 mile in his first cross country race. Our top 5 JH boys runners included two 6th graders, all running sub 6:55 miles. 8th graders Ellie Cheng and Valencia Osuna also medaled, leading our JH Girls to a 3rd place team finish beating out CCS and 2 other schools.

With over ten runners competing at their first-ever XC Meet, The Academy represented well to start the year off! Congrats to Coach Rhea, Coach Spears, and Coach Norman!

Both teams run at Mustang this week with the JH competing Friday morning and the HS running Saturday night at Mustang Wildhorse Park

And the Volleyball teams continued their hot start this week. The JH teams won 2 straight-set matches over Terra Verde and Life Christian this week, while the HS teams played in front of a packed house Tuesday vs conference foe Cristo Rey. Both the JV and Varsity teams won in straight sets to move to 3-0. Thursday night it was more of the same as the Griffins made short work of the Life Christian Eagles on the road winning 3-0 to stay in first place in the Metro Athletic Conference with a 3-0 conference record.

The JH host the 3rd Annual Griffin JH Tournament next Saturday, September 4th with matches starting at 8am.
