Message from Coach MAC
Have you heard the phrase, “It’s a heart issue”? This is an interesting phrase as we look at tuning the souls of our children in harmonizing the life of the mind with the life of the body. In athletics there are several cliches like “He has a lot of heart,” or “Our hearts just weren’t in it today.” To play a sport one must commit passionately to practice, to sacrifice time – the whole “blood, sweat, and tears” cliché. But there is also the core values of Passion, Discipline, Humility, and Unity that require a link between our minds and our hearts. None of those values can really be adhered to without a commonality between our hearts and minds. This is what we strive to teach in athletics: not just the physical feats that everyone sees, but also the soul and the mind that drives the body to great heights. Go Griffins Go!
Weekly Recap
Monday the Griffins lost a nail biter in 5 sets against the 2nd place Covenant Community Lions. The team played tremendous defense and had a season-high 75 digs and 10 blocks, but the Lions outlasted the Griffins in a long, match of point swings. Junior Blevin Garriott led the team in assists and aces and was only behind freshman Addison Dale for kills. The ACADEMY split the regular season with Covenant going 1-1, with set score of 5-5 and a point score of 211-204 in The Academy’s favor. The point differential could come into play as the teams head to the Metro conference tournament in a few weeks.
JV (2-0): 25-6, 25-8
Varsity (2-3): 26-28, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 12-15
The Cross-Country teams had another great showing in challenging conditions in Ada at the East Central University Invitational Thursday afternoon. The heat continued to be a factor along with a tough course, but our Griffins represented well! 8th graders Ellie Cheng and Sarah Brown finished top 20 in the JH girl’s race. Isaiah Payne finished 2nd overall in the 2-mile JH boys race, followed by Owen Hoyle, Noah and Graham Schill, James Blackwell, and William Beasley all medaling. The JH boys earned a 3rd place team finish.
The Varsity girls were led by Anna Claire Orr and Esperanza Osuna who both finished in the top 10 and finished 4th place as a team. The Varsity boys ran a 5K race with a depleted squad due to illness and injury with Jay Abbott finishing first on the team. The Griffins will compete next on the 18th at CCS in Norman.
