Rob McKinzie

Coach MAC is in his second year as Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director.   He has coached basketball at the Varsity or College level for 19 years (12 of those at Christian universities).  Rob came to The ACADEMY from Redlands Community College where he served as Head Women’s Basketball Assistant and also taught as Instructor in Sports Wellness at Oklahoma Christian University during that time.  Coach MAC spent ten years on the men’s basketball staff at OC and has also coached both boys and girls at the HS level at Oklahoma 6A schools.

Rob earned his BA at York College (NE), and his MA in General Education from UCO. He is passionate about teaching fundamentals in athletics and mentoring young adults and coaches.   In addition to his passion for Christian education, he serves as a bible class leader and on praise and worship teams. 

He and his wife Rachel have two children, Adi and Austin, and love spending time as a family, vacationing, reading, and playing sports.

Sarah Rhea

Coach Rhea is in her 8th season as the Griffin Cross Country coach. Sarah also makes her return to the classroom where she teaches Blended PreK at The ACADEMY South campus in addition to her role as Assistant Athletic Director.  

Sarah graduated from The University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters in Adult & Higher Education with an emphasis in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration. She attended Weatherford High School where she was class Valedictorian. While there she played basketball, ran Cross Country and Track, winning an Indoor State Championship and multiple Academic State Championship honors.  

Sarah is married to Shawn and they have three children at The Academy ranging from 3rd grade to PreK.

Shawn Rhea

  • Dialectic Boys Basketball Coach

Coach Rhea returns in his role as Junior High boys head coach in 2020 after leading the team to their first HCAA semifinal appearance.  Shawn graduated from Wynnewood  where he played basketball.  He went on to receive an Associates of Arts degree from Central Baptist College in Conway, AR and a Bachelors degree in Organizational Leadership from UCO.  He is currently a Kindergarten teacher in Oklahoma City.  Shawn has a passion for youth athletes and has coached many youth teams ranging in age from 4 years to 8th grade. 

Shawn is married to Cross Country Coach Sarah Rhea and the couple has three children at The ACADEMY. 

Jody Wickersham

  • Girls Dialectic Basketball Coach

Coach Wickersham enters his third season coaching the girls basketball program.  Jody graduated from Newcastle High School where he played varsity basketball earning honorable mention on The Oklahoman’s All-State and Little All-City 4A teams and received three All-Star game invitations. Jody is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma (’00) with a BA in Journalism and Broadcasting. He works professionally as a video producer. 

Jody and his wife Abbie, a former Academy teacher, have been involved with The ACADEMY for many years and all five of their children attend the school. 

Chelsea Smith

  • Assistant Girls Basketball Coach
  • Assistant Volleyball Coach

Coach Smith is in her first year coaching at The ACADEMY.  In addition to her role as the assistant girls basketball coach, Chelsea also is the assistant volleyball coach.  Smith teaches adjunct classes at UCO while she pursues a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree through Baylor University.  Coach Smith spent 4 years at Trinity Christian in Lubbock, TX where she coached volleyball, basketball, and track before coming to The ACADEMY.

Smith earned her M.S. in Kinesiology from Texas Tech University in 2016, and a B.B.S. in Sport Fitness from Hardin-Simmons University in 2012. While at Tech, she worked as a graduate teaching assistant in the wellness department teaching volleyball courses.
 
While in college, Smith also served 5 years in sport ministry working with churches and communities across the United States and worldwide, including teaching basketball clinics in Haiti and Panama.

Andrew Johnson

  • Assistant Boys Dialectic Basketball Coach

Coach Johnson is a graduate from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Sports and Facility Management.  Andrew competed in basketball, track and cross-country throughout his time at Weatherford HS, winning a State Championship and All-State recognition along the way. He holds the Air Force Basic Training record for the 5k, and he still enjoys running and playing basketball with his friends and family. 

Andrew and his wife Melissa have three young children, and he owns and operates a retail consulting company based in Oklahoma City.

Brendan King

  • Assistant Boys Rhetoric Basketball Coach

Coach King is in his second year with The ACADEMY and primarily works with the Griffin guards and wings.  Coach King also serves as the Physical Education instructor at our North Campus.  Brendan graduated from Oklahoma Christian University in 2020 with a  Sports Management degree. The Grandbury, TX native was a member of the OC Junior Varsity Basketball team and also serves as a coach at Solid Rock Basketball in Edmond.

Brendan was a four-sport varsity athlete as a sophomore competing in Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track.  He was All-District Honorable Mention as a Junior and First Team All-District in both football and basketball as a senior.  

Jon Pitcher

  • Assistant Boys Rhetoric Basketball Coach

Coach Pitcher is also in his second year at The ACADEMY.  An ’01 Business Management graduate of Oklahoma Christian University, Jon continued his law study at the University of Texas Law School where he graduated with honors.  Currently he is the managing broker of Two Doors Realty. Coach Pitch brings a lifelong love for basketball to the Griffins where he works with the Rhetoric Posts and Forwards.  

Jon is originally from Portland, OR where he was First Team All-League and Second Team All-State in Class A at Columbia Christian High School (’97).  Jon and his wife Kelly have three children.

Josh Spears

Teaching in the Dialectic and Rhetoric schools for roughly 15 years at The ACADEMY, Coach Spears also serves as Head Track coach in addition to his cross country role, while also serving as Lyceum Director.  He grew up playing and loving sports, especially football and track, and even spent a brief stint on the baseball team at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist where he earned his BA in Theology.  Spears also earned an MA in Philosophy from the University of Oklahoma.  

Josh is married to Kirsten and they have four children from high school to preschool.
